What Are You Chasing?

Chasing After the Worthless

I have a pastor friend who likes to hashtag a lot of his posts with "#chasingJesus." I suppose to some this may seem like an odd phrase to use, and I honestly don't know the exact intent behind his words, but when I see this I often think about the pursuit of Christ that our lives should demonstrate. As a Christian, there is never a time or a season in life when we "make it." We will never, in this mortal life, reach the point where we can say, "Well, I think I've done enough on this whole following Jesus thing."

"Choose instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold,
for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her."
Proverbs 8:10-11

In this life, the thing that we chase most often is the pursuit of happiness. We chase the dollar. We chase the next vacation. We chase the new car and the new house. We chase these things because they give us happiness in the moment. And, let's be honest, they usually do. In fact, we have placed so much emphasis on this pursuit that we now claim it is a "God-given right." I would not argue that God doesn't desire that we be happy, but I would argue that he is much more concerned with our holiness than with our happiness.

But holiness is never found through accomplishment or through things. The more we have in this life never translates to an increase in our holiness. The more "right" we are in this world and with the expectations it has for us does not increase our righteousness in the eyes of God.

And this is what matters most.

The writer of Proverbs is giving yet another clear piece of wisdom and instruction. We are to choose God's wisdom. We are to choose the knowledge of God. We can tie it back to the idea of chasing Jesus. If we are chasing Jesus, then we are chasing God's wisdom and God's knowledge. If we are chasing something else, we are running in the wrong direction. There is nothing you will ever attain in this lifetime that will measure up to the priceless value of knowing Christ. What are you chasing today?
